Dear Friend,

This week, I reminded my constituents of the January 31st deadline to sign up for health insurance through the Healthcare.gov marketplace, marched in the Memphis Women's March, spoke in opposition to a bill to limit health care services for women who need it most, cosponsored a bill to advance the Equal Rights Amendment, introduced a bill to require law enforcement officers to collect accurate data on instances of police use of deadly force, attended a community meeting to save Dunbar Elementary School, opposed the advancement of the Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipelines, remembered those who lost their lives during the Holocaust, and introduced a bill to take partisan politics out of the process of drawing Congressional districts. Keep reading to learn more about my week and follow me on Twitter and Facebook to see these updates as they happen.

The Trump Administration has cancelled all advertisements intended to encourage people to sign up for health care coverage through the Healthcare.gov insurance marketplace. I wanted to make sure you were aware that TUESDAY, JANUARY 31is the final day to sign up for health insurance through the HealthCare.gov marketplace for 2017 coverage. I encourage all of my constituents who do not yet have health insurance to sign up as soon as possible and also to share this information with their families, friends and neighbors. Visit my website for more information.

Fighting for Women's Rights

On Saturday, I was proud to lead thousands of women, men and children at the Memphis Women's March. We marched from the Judge D'Army Bailey Courthouse to the National Civil Rights Museum. I also spoke during the march and you can watch a piece of my speech here. On Monday, I joined Carol Costello on CNN to discuss the Women's March and the Affordable Care Act. Watch my interview here.

On Tuesday, I spoke on the House floor in opposition to H.R. 7, No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act. This bill would take away health care services for women who need it most: low-income families, young people and women of color. Watch my remarks here.

On Thursday, I cosponsored a bill to remove a deadline to allow for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. It is past time for women to have equal rights in this country.

Helping Prevent the Use of Deadly Force by Police

On Tuesday, I introduced the National Statistics on Deadly Force Transparency Act, which would close a loophole in federal law that prevents adequate collection of comprehensive national data regarding justified and unjustified use of deadly force by police. Read more about my bill here.

Saving Dunbar Elementary School

On Thursday, I attended a community meeting to save Dunbar Elementary School. Dunbar is a historic school in Orange Mound that has high academic achievement from its students and strong community support. Good public schools are an important part of fighting crime. I was touched by the outpouring of support from the many neighborhood residents who attended the meeting. It truly was "what democracy looks like." I would like to commend Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dorsey Hopson and board members Mike Kernell, Chris Caldwell, Shante Avant, Stephanie Love, Miska Clay-Bibbs, Kevin Woods and Teresa Jones for attending. I would also like to commend Memphis City Councilwoman Jamita Swearengen for attending as well.

Rejecting the Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipelines

On Tuesday, President Trump signed executive orders advancing the Dakota Access Pipeline and Keystone XL Pipeline. It's a shame that the President is moving forward to build these pipelines. He clearly values big oil profits over protecting clean water or combating climate change. While President Trump claims that he will put America first, these pipelines will carry the dirty tar sands oil from Canada to Texas and then be sent back to Canada to be sold to China. These pipelines will put Canada first and China second and strengthen the businesses relationship between the two countries.

Remembering Those Who Lost Their Lives During the Holocaust

Today is the 72nd anniversary of the liberation of theAuschwitz-Birkenauconcentration camp. On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we remember the millions of Jews and other victims who were murdered during the Holocaust. Never Again. Never Forget.

Getting Politics Out of the Redistricting Process

Today, I introduced the John Tanner Fairness and Independence in Redistricting Act to take partisan politics out of the process of drawing Congressional districts. Read more about my bill here.
