Helping Memphians Who Are Living in Substandard Public Housing Facilities
On Monday, Senator Marco Rubio joined me in sending a letter to the House Appropriations Committee leaders urging them to include provisions in the Fiscal Year 2017 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill to address the current deplorable living conditions at Global Ministries Foundation properties in Memphis and around the country. Read our letter here.
Fighting for Improved Infrastructure in Memphis
On Tuesday, I participated in a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland, Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell, President and CEO of the Greater Memphis Chamber Phil Trenary, President and CEO of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority Scott Brockman, representatives from the Tennessee Department of Transportation, and other Memphis business leaders about federal funding for critical improvements to the Lamar Avenue Corridor. Secretary Foxx wished me a happy birthday, and I told him a great birthday gift would be for the Department of Transportation to award Memphis the federal funds for Lamar Avenue and a TIGER Grant for improved rapid transit in Memphis. I told the Secretary, who was the mayor of Charlotte, NC, that Memphis has given Charlotte so much with Greg Hardy, Michael Oher, Courtney Lee, and Deangelo Williams that they owe us one. He was speechless. LOL
Thanking My Constituents for the Opportunity to Serve
Tuesday was my birthday and, in a speech on the House floor, I considered what I’m thankful for as I reflected on my life. Representing Memphis and such fine constituents is at the top of that list. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you in the House of Representatives as we work together to build a more prosperous and more just 9th Congressional District. Watch my remarks here.
I was pleased that my amendment to increase funding by 10% for the SuperTruck II program, which works to improve freight trucking fuel efficiency, was adopted in the House. This amendment is good for our environment, good for trucking and freight companies like our very own FedEx and Cummins Mid-South, and good for America.
Meeting with Memphis Spelling Bee Champion Samuel Paul
On Tuesday, I met with 7th grader Samuel Paul from First Assembly Christian School in Memphis. Samuel was the winner of the Memphis Spelling Bee and participated this week in the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee. I would like to congratulate Samuel on his performance this week.
Meeting with Local High School Students
On Tuesday, I met with high school students from the Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering on their school trip to Washington, DC. It was my pleasure to have the opportunity to speak with the students and answer their questions on the steps of the Capitol.
It was a pleasure to welcome 11th grader Dylan Taylor (pictured above) to my office. Dylan painted a piece of art for my birthday entitled Memphis Freedom Skyline. I will be hanging the piece in my office with other pieces of art depicting the bridges and Mississippi River. Thank you Dylan and the students from the Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering.
