Requesting DOJ Investigation of the Trump Foundation for Misconduct
On Wednesday I, along with the other Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee, sent a letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch requesting the U.S. Department of Justice immediately investigate the Donald J. Trump Foundation for allegations of misconduct surrounding the $25,000 donation to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi. I spoke with Tamron Hall on MSNBC about this letter. You can watch my interview here.
Mourning the Victims of the South Memphis Fire
My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, families, neighbors and friends affected by the early-morning fire in South Memphis on Monday. I am deeply saddened by this horrible tragedy. I would like to thank the Memphis Fire Department and the other first responders and medical personnel on the scene for their valiant efforts in attempting to rescue the victims.
Extending Justice for Sex Crime Victims
On Thursday, Congressman Ted Poe (R-TX) and I introduced the Extending Justice for Sex Crime Victims Act. This bipartisan, bicameral bill harmonizes the statute of limitations for underage sex abuse victims and sex trafficking victim minors to 28 years old, rather than the current age of 21. Read more about our bill here.
Welcoming TEAM Memphis to Washington
On Thursday, I welcomed Coach Dorsey Sims and TEAM Memphis to my Capitol Hill office. The students, from Melrose High School and East High School, will be playing games in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and New York City. Good luck to TEAM Memphis!
Standing Up For University of Memphis Athletics
On Wednesday, I attended the Congressional Football Caucus kick-off breakfast hosted by the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame. I had the opportunity to speak to Big 12 Conference Commissioner Bob Bowlsby about University of Memphis being left out of Big 12 expansion. I told him Tiger Football would exact revenge on Kansas on Saturday at the Liberty Bowl. Go Tigers!
Celebrating the Southern Heritage Classic
On Saturday, I participated in the Southern Heritage Classic parade in Orange Mound, celebrating the historic football rivalry between Tennessee State University and Jackson State University. Congratulations to Tennessee State University on their victory this year!
On Tuesday, I announced that the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority received a $2.4 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Voluntary Airport Low Emissions (VALE) Program to support clean air and airport emissions reduction initiatives at Memphis International Airport. Read more about the grant here.
Improving Health Data Collection
On Wednesday, I announced that the University of Memphis received a $4 million federal grant from the National Science Foundation for research of high-frequency mobile sensor data with an emphasis on health data collection. Read more about the grant here.

Opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture
The new Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. will officially open its doors to visitors next Saturday, September 24. It is the only museum in America devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture, history too often overlooked or given short shrift in other museums. Visitors can reserve free timed entry passes for the museum here.
