Thank You for Allowing Me the Opportunity to Serve you in Congress
Dear Friend,
This week, I commended President Obama for commuting the prison sentences of 214 non-violent, low-level drug offenders, attended community events for National Night Out, spoke to the first Memphis Youth City Council, attended the “Soul Saving Sunday” service in Frayser, and remembered Tennessee pioneer Jane Eskind. Thank You for Allowing Me the Opportunity to Serve you in Congress
It is an honor to serve the 9th District and its citizens in Congress. I look forward to continue fighting for better and more affordable healthcare, voting rights, criminal justice and drug policy reform, college debt relief and other issues important to Memphis. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve you.
Commending Presidential Commutations for Low-Level Drug Offenders
On Wednesday, I commended President Obama for his decision to commute the sentences of 214 non-violent, low-level drug offenders incarcerated in federal prisons, including a Memphian. Read more about these commutations here.
Building Trust Between the Police and Our Communities
On Tuesday, I attended several different Memphis neighborhood association National Night Out events with General Sessions Court Clerk Ed Stanton, Jr. National Night Out is an annual movement across the country to help build trust between the police and communities to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live.
Congratulating the First Youth City Council
On Thursday, I attended the inauguration of the first Memphis Youth City Council at City Hall. The Memphis Youth City Council will consist of 13 Memphis-area high school students who have been elected by their peers and will advise the city council and the Mayor on youth issues. Congratulations to the students.
Attending the “Soul Saving Sunday” Service
On Sunday, I attended the “Soul Saving Sunday” church service at MLK College Preparatory High School. Four churches in Frayser came together to show unity within the community. Churches included Pursuit of God Transformation Center, Union Grove Baptist Church, Lifeline to a Dying World Ministries and One Faith Christian Center Church.
On Thursday, Jane Eskind, the first woman to ever win a statewide election in Tennessee, passed away. Read my statement on her passing here.
