WASHINGTON – Congress Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today applauded the approach being taken by the Biden-Harris Administration to address gun violence. The strategy implements preventative measures that are proven to reduce violent crime, and tackles the root causes – including by addressing the flow of firearms used to commit crimes. Memphis is one of 15 communities the administration identified that will use new American Rescue Plan funding to invest in proven community violence intervention programs.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Aviation, today announced that Memphis International Airport (MEM) will receive grants from the Federal Aviation Administration totaling $49,359,349 authorized by the American Rescue Plan he voted for that became law in March. The funding is intended to address the economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic which has drastically affected air travel. The funding includes $1,986,200 to help shore up MEM's concessions.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will receive a $619,047 grant from the National Cancer Institute for research on lymphoblastic leukemia.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"I'm pleased that St. Jude is receiving this research funding for its ongoing work on childhood cancers. This grant will keep scientists in their labs and will result in breakthroughs that can save lives."

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Memphis and Shelby County will receive grants totaling $7,855,982 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health. The City of Memphis will receive $3.9 million for the Memphis Fire Department's healthcare navigator program. Shelby County will receive $3,955,982 to help build public, academic and community partnerships in response to COVID-19.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today released the following statement after learning that Kenneth R. Hubert of Marionville, Missouri, has pleaded guilty to federal charges of making threats against him and his colleague, Congressman Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri. The plea agreement establishes that on May 6, 2019, Hubert called Congressman Cohen's Washington office and told a staff member that he had "a noose with the congressman's name on it" and planned to "put a noose around his neck" and drag him behind his pickup truck.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today questioned witnesses at a Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security hearing on "Undoing the Damage of the War on Drugs: A Renewed Call for Sentencing Reform."

In his remarks, Congressman Cohen noted what he called "the true reason for the War on Drugs" revealed by former Nixon Administration senior domestic adviser John Ehrlichman in a 1994 article in Harper's Magazine.
