WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today explained why local law enforcement agencies decline to cooperate with an “out of control” Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency at a markup of legislation aimed at forcing state and local governments to enforce federal immigration law.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today questioned Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem at an oversight hearing. Congressman Cohen asked Secretary Noem about her lack of response to repeated letters he has written to her over the past year and about claims that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are deporting the “worst of the worst.”

Congressman Cohen pressed the Attorney General on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)’s recruitment effort that targets local law enforcement officers and on the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) failure to investigate the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who were slain by federal immigration enforcement officers in Minnesota.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) wrote to Governor Bill Lee on Friday evening asking him to seek Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance for Shelby County for expenses incurred in response to the recent snowstorm. Congressman Cohen noted that the preliminary damage assessment of $4.7 million exceeds the minimum requirement for seeking the assistance.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today recognized Tuesday’s annual Holocaust Remembrance Day by calling Renee Good and Alex Pretti, killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis for standing up for a just cause, just like the “righteousness among the nations” who saved Jews from the Holocaust.

He noted that the painter Marc Chagall credited the “righteous” non-Jews for saving his life after he fled to Marseille during the Second World War. The Nazi assaults, like current ICE outrages, are being conducted by agents of government.
