WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today addressed the shooting death of a 37-year-old U.S. citizen by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Wednesday in Minneapolis at a committee markup.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee who was in House Chamber when insurrectionists attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, will question witnesses and testify at a special House hearing on the fifth anniversary of that violent attempt to subvert democracy. The hearing will focus on what happened and the importance of accountability. Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, made the following statement after reviewing news reports of the military-law enforcement extraction of Nicolas Maduro from Venezuela overnight:
“Nicolas Maduro and his wife were fugitives from justice and will now have their day in a U.S. court. Without question, Maduro is a bad guy and stole an election to stay in power and has engaged in activities that were deleterious to the United States.
MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets for All (SS4A) Program has awarded two grants totaling $6,891,760 to the Memphis Fire Department and the MidSouth Development District.
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), the House Ranking Member of the Commission for Security and Cooperation in Europe, today went to the House floor to denounce the Trump administration’s recently published National Security Strategy. In his remarks, he said in part:
“At the end of last week, President Trump published his National Security Strategy. It could have been called his National Insecurity Strategy. To say it’s bad is an understatement. It’s disastrous.
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced three Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) to the City of Memphis from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The funding, totaling $3,022,867, is part of FEMA’s nationwide release of Fiscal Year 2024 fire program awards, and will support vehicle acquisition and operations and safety investments for the Memphis Fire Department.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today wrote to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem seeking clarification of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recruitment practices as the President seeks to deport one million people a year. Specifically, he asked whether insurrectionists pardoned by the President for their conduct during the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol are employed by the department or rightly deemed ineligible.
