[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice, applauded today’s unanimous decision by the U.S. Sentencing Commission to retroactively apply its recently-updated sentencing guidelines to an estimated 46,000 non-violent drug offenders who have already been sentenced.

This week marked one year from a misguided Supreme Court decision that gutted the Voting Rights Act, I brought a senior VA official to Memphis to address our veteran community’s concerns, spoke on the House Floor about the urgent need to restore the protections of the Voting Rights Act, and met with a talented young Memphis artist who won this year’s Congressional Art Competition in the Ninth District. For two days, the main theme on Capitol Hill, at least for Democrats, has been voting rights.
Dozens gathered in the rotunda on Tuesday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King and commemorate the Civil Rights Act. The Senate held a detailed hearing Wednesday morning about a proposal to update the Voting Rights Act, and congressional Democrats took the stage on the Capitol lawn in the afternoon to demanding they be given a vote on the issue.
