[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) joined Congressman Charles B. Rangel (NY-13) and several other House Democrats today in introducing legislation aimed at allowing free trade between the two countries. The Free Trade with Cuba Act reflects President Barack Obama’s announcement in December of normalized relations with Cuba and the subsequent rules easing travel and trade restrictions. Joining Congressman Cohen as original co-sponsors of Congressman Rangel’s legislation are Reps.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) supports President Obama’s intention to expand access to higher education, which the President plans to announce in Tennessee today. Congressman Cohen is pleased that many aspects of the President’s plan are similar to the Tennessee HOPE Education Lottery scholarship program that Congressman Cohen, as a Tennessee State Senator, led the 2-decade fight to create. The Tennessee Education Lottery has provided more than $3 billion in education funding to Tennessee students.

Nine members of Tennessee’s congressional delegation Thursday sent a letter to Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Marilyn Tavenner requesting an extension of TennCare’s waiver approval from earlier this year. Because Tennessee does not receive funding through the Medicaid disproportionate share hospital program that every other state participates in, the lawmakers are requesting continuing funds to support Tennessee hospitals that help tens of thousands of low-income patients receive medical coverage they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) reminded the residents of the Ninth District of today’s deadline to enroll through HealthCare.gov in affordable health insurance coverage that kicks in on January 1st. This year’s enrollment period runs until February 15th, but today is the deadline to enroll in coverage that will take effect on January 1st, 2015.
