WASHINGTON, D.C.-- Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) a federal grant worth $399,162 for heart and vascular diseases research – specifically, to elucidate basic molecular mechanisms that lead to vascular disease in response to vascular injury and atherosclerosis. The new federal funds will be administered by the National, Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI).

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center a federal grant worth $315,000 to develop a safe and effective vaccine to prevent Group A Streptococcal (GAS) infections and their complications. GAS infections include acute rheumatic fever (ARF), rheumatic heart disease (RHD) and invasive disease. The funds will be administered by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center three grants worth $590,428. Two grants worth $220,792 and $74,792 will be used to expand research into neurological disorders and will be distributed by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). The third grant – worth $294,844 – will be used for aging research and will be distributed by the National Institute on Aging (NIA).
MEMPHIS, TN – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted a waiver until August 31 to allow winter-grade fuel to be sold in Shelby County in the wake of the Valero refinery explosion, which has created a reduced fuel supply throughout the region. Yesterday the Congressman sent a letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson expressing his support for Governor Bill Haslam’s request for a waiver. Attached is the letter EPA sent granting the waiver.
