Tennessee’s Ninth Congressional District is located in the southwest corner of the Volunteer state and is comprised of parts of Shelby and Tipton counties. Its largest population center is the City of Memphis, situated on the banks of the Mississippi River and bordering both Arkansas and Mississippi. Memphis is steeped in rich Delta history and culture, while also transforming itself into a 21st Century city with historic investments in cutting-edge technologies. It has long been known as America’s Distribution Center.

The second largest city in Tennessee and among the largest metropolitan areas in the South, Memphis is a bustling hub for BBQ, entertainment and business. Memphis is home to Regional One Health, the regional trauma center for Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a global leader in pediatric cancer research and treatment, Methodist Hospital, and LeBonheur Children's Hospital.

Home to FedEx, AutoZone, International Paper, and several other Fortune 500 companies, Memphis is consistently ranked among the best places to conduct business. A center for higher education and research, the Ninth District boasts the University of Memphis, the University of Tennessee-Health Science Center, LeMoyne-Owen College, Rhodes College, Christian Brothers University and the Southern College of Optometry.

Due to its central location and extensive logistics infrastructure, Memphis’ International Airport handles more cargo than any other airport in America and second in the world. Memphis is also home to the University of Memphis Tigers, the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies, and the Memphis Redbirds baseball team.

Culturally, Memphis is world-renowned for its music and history. Beale Street remains a centerpiece of the city’s cultural life, and legendary recording studios such as Stax Records and Sun Studio (where Elvis began his career) helped shape American music. The city continues that legacy today through studios like Willie Mitchell's Royal Studios and Ardent Recording Studios.

Following the most recent U.S. Census, parts of Tipton County, which is the birthplace of musician Isaac Hayes, were added to the Ninth District through state redistricting. Located north of Memphis, Tipton County contributes a strong rural and agricultural presence to the district and remains closely connected to the Memphis regional economy.
