In addition, Congress approved $5 million that I secured to help fight our backlog of untested rape kits, and I introduced legislation to close a loophole that prevents us from effectively identifying and addressing fatal police interactions. This week marked one year from a misguided Supreme Court decision that gutted the Voting Rights Act, I brought a senior VA official to Memphis to address our veteran community’s concerns, spoke on the House Floor about the urgent need to restore the protections of the Voting Rights Act, and met with a talented young Memphis artist who won this year’s Congressional Art Competition in the Ninth District. [WASHINGTON, DC] – As many in Congress focused on getting out of town as quickly as possible last week, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) remained focused on his work helping Memphis and introduced the Jobs for Urban Sustainability and Training (JUST) in America Act. The legislation is designed to create jobs and provide training for Americans struggling to find work by eliminating tax breaks to major oil companies and putting the funds towards public works and job training programs for unemployed workers.
[MEMPHIS, TN] – In an effort to ensure Memphis businesses are well-informed and competitive when trying to win contracts with the federal government, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) hosted a Federal Procurement Fair this morning at the University of Memphis.
