MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) made the following statement after learning this morning of the passing of Congressman Alcee Hastings of Florida:

MEMPHIS – On Sunday, as many celebrate Easter, many in Memphis and around the world will also silently commemorate the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in our city 53 years ago. Congressman Cohen released the following statement:
"Dr. King came to Memphis to demonstrate that all labor has dignity and was killed as he stood up for the rights of striking sanitation workers. As we commemorate his life, let's be mindful of the work he started and be dedicated to advancing human rights, labor rights, racial justice and an end to war."

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced two grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The University of Memphis will receive a $50,000 grant from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities for a project collaborating with faith leaders in the Deep South to end the stigmatization of those with HIV. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will receive $444,775 from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for research on improving genetically modified T cells for medulloblastomas.

MEMPHIS – The Biden White House and Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) this morning announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will set up and operate a COVID-19 vaccination center at the Pipkin Building at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium capable of delivering 3,000 shots a day. The facility will open on April 7 and will be supported by members of the U.S. Military, state and federal public health officials, and other experts.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today released a statement after the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday refused to stay a Memphis District Court judge's order allowing the resumption of evictions:

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that three Memphis community health centers will receive grants totaling $19,415,250 from the American Rescue Plan Act that Congress passed and President Biden recently signed into law. Christ Community Health Services will receive $13,137,500, Memphis Health Center will receive $5,159,875, and Tri-State Community Health Center will receive $1,117,875.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Shelby County's Ryan White HIV programs will receive an emergency relief grant of $5,234,561 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today reintroduced the Housing Accountability Act, legislation that would hold property owners of low-income housing accountable for poor living conditions. Specifically, the legislation would require residents of private properties that have Section 8 Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) contracts to be surveyed twice a year to determine the existence of persistent problems with a property's physical condition or management. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida reintroduced identical legislation in the Senate earlier this week.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today introduced Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Bernice B. Donald of Memphis and questioned her at a hearing of the Subcommittee on the Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet on "The Importance of a Diverse Federal Judiciary."

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, welcomed Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg – "Secretary Pete" -- to his first committee hearing today and raised issues involving the Byhalia Connection Pipeline, the adequacy of Federal Aviation Administration passenger seat safety testing, Memphis' high pedestrian fatality rate and truck safety.
