Congressman Cohen Announces Full-Year Transit Funding for Memphis Tri-State Area

Funding supersedes partial-year apportionments announced in February
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today announced that $18,446,336 has been allocated for the Memphis-based tri-state region by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The funding comes from funding from both the Mass Transit Account of the Highway Trust Fund, advance appropriations provided by the historic Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and annual appropriations. The investment figure released today supersedes the half-year FTA 2024 appropriation Congressman Cohen announced on February 29.
The apportionments will allow states, tribal governments and transit providers to move forward with applying for their FY 2024 federal funds and will help communities:
- expand, modernize, maintain, and operate public transportation systems;
- upgrade stations, tracks, and maintenance facilities;
- plan and design new transit corridors; and
- provide access for seniors and riders with disabilities.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
“The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) has seen historically high investments in its programs and infrastructure in recent years due the IIJA. This funding announced today will further strengthen MATA’s investment in the future of transit ridership and improve the quality of life for the thousands who depend on it.”
Bacarra Mauldin, MATA interim CEO, made the following statement:
“We are collaborating with many stakeholders to find creative solutions to stretch our dollars to increase the positive impact on riders. However, the true transformation of transit comes with consistent increases in our annual appropriations, such as those being announced today. We appreciate Congressman Cohen’s continued push at the federal level for greater investments in public transit in the Mid-south.”
