WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen, a senior member of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, secured the inclusion of several pieces of legislation in the bipartisan infrastructure framework, or the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, that passed today in the Senate. The bipartisan infrastructure bill includes the Multiple Substance Impaired Driving Prevention Act in its entirety, the Interstate Rail Compacts Advancement Act in its near entirety, and parts of the Stop Underrides Act and the Complete Streets Act.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today asked the White House to extend the national eviction moratorium that ended Saturday and threatens and put 11.4 million people at risk of homelessness during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Congressman Cohen re-introduced the Emergency Eviction Enforcement Act in March to protect vulnerable tenants from evictions during a national emergency or public health crisis.

WASHINGTON – Congressmen Steve Cohen (TN-09), Danny K. Davis (IL-07), and Eric Swalwell (CA-15) today introduced the Private Student Loan Bankruptcy Fairness Act. This legislation would restore fairness in student lending by treating privately issued student loans the same as other types of private debt are treated in bankruptcy. Until 2005, this type of student loan debt was dischargeable in bankruptcy, but a change to the bankruptcy code that year removed that consumer protection.

This bill is intended to end abuse of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) by autocrats misusing its detention mechanisms to pursue, harass, or persecute political opponents and dissidents with trumped up criminal charges.
