MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today introduced the Share America's Diverse History in the Capitol Act, which would allow states to send three statues to be displayed in the National Statuary Collection. The bill also encourages them to honor women and members of ethnic and racial minority groups, now underrepresented in memorials inside the U.S. Capitol, to celebrate their contributions to our shared heritage.

States currently send two statues for placement in Statuary Hall, Emancipation Hall and elsewhere in the U.S. Capitol complex.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today applauded inclusion of his language transferring the operation and maintenance of the Memphis flood control system to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Water Resources Development Act during a markup Wednesday. The proposal is consistent with the Corps' Mississippi River and Tributaries Project management of other flood control systems in the lower Mississippi River Valley that protect communities from devastating flooding.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today announced that his two report language requests were included in the Transportation and Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill that was approved by the Appropriations Committee today and is being considered by the full House of Representatives later this month. His two report language requests relate to the prioritization of complete street plans and the completion of a rulemaking to improve rear truck trailer guards.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today commended the House Appropriations Subcommittee on the Legislative Branch for reducing plastic waste, including from plastic straws, and for including his report language request. That language encourages the elimination of all single-use plastic products including lightweight plastic carryout bags, food and drinkware from expanded polystyrene, plastic stirrers and plastic utensils. The House of Representatives is expected to consider this annual spending measure later this month.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will receive a grant of $721,739 for research into inflammasome-mediated processes in cancer from the National Cancer Institute.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"I'm pleased that St. Jude continues to work at the cutting edge of research on cancer cures. This grant is an important investment in the work its scientists and researchers do each day, and I commend them for their dedication."

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will receive a grant of $410,606 for research into cancer progression and metastasis from the National Cancer Institute.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"Our premier children's research hospital continues its pioneering work on cancer research despite the trying circumstances caused by the pandemic. I'm pleased this research funding will keep scientists and researchers in their labs working on important breakthroughs."

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), the senior co-chair of the Caucus on U.S.–Turkey Relations and Turkish Americans, today condemned Turkish President Recep Tayyyip Erdogan's decision Friday to reconvert the Hagia Sophia from a secular museum celebrating Turkish culture to a mosque. The move to convert the iconic monument, inaugurated in 537 as a Byzantine Christian cathedral and later named a mosque in 1453, was widely seen as an effort to bolster Erdogan's domestic appeal to conservative Muslims in Istanbul where he once served as mayor.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, today condemned President Trump's commutation of Roger Stone's sentence on seven felony convictions. Stone was convicted of making false statements to Congress, obstruction of justice and witness tampering. He was scheduled to surrender Tuesday to begin a 40-month sentence.
