[WASHINGTON, DC] - Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) this week introduced legislation, the Fair Debt Collection Improvement Act, to protect Americans from the predatory and abusive tactics of debt collectors. The Congressman’s proposal would prevent debt collectors from threatening legal repercussions when none are available or tricking consumers into paying more than they would otherwise be legally obligated to pay.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today introduced legislation, the Restorative Justice in Schools Act, to reduce youth incarceration in America by helping train school personnel such as teachers and counselors in innovative conflict resolution methods that are less likely to result in non-violent juveniles entering the penal system. Currently, many school systems involve the police in non-violent incidents on school property, which helps feed the “school-to-prison” pipeline that is both expensive and harmful to America’s youth.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that The MED will receive $98,000 in funding through a U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) grant to the Shelby County Health Care Corporation.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) this week was reappointed by the Speaker of the House to the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the Helsinki Commission. The Commission is an independent U.S. Government agency created in 1976 to monitor and encourage compliance with the Helsinki Final Act and other Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) commitments in 57 participating States across Europe, Central Asia and North America.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today introduced the Voter ID Accessibility Act to mitigate the harmful and potentially disenfranchising effects of the unfair, burdensome and restrictive Tennessee voter ID law. Late last week, the Tennessee Supreme Court upheld the law, which requires Tennesseans to present selected photographic identification—including gun permits and hunting licenses but excluding photographic library cards—in order to cast a ballot.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Just months after Delta cut a third of its Memphis departures in June, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today made the following statement after learning that the airline was continuing its string of broken promises by ending Memphis’ status as a base for flight attendants, cutting as many as 126 cargo and ticketing jobs in the city, and further reducing the number of their departing Memphis International Airport flights from 64 to 40.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis has been awarded a total of $519,911 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for two projects.

“These funds will help continue the important work being done by the skilled researchers at the UT Health Science Center in Memphis,” said Congressman Cohen.
