[MEMPHIS, TN] – After Congressman Cohen urged Attorney General Holder to allow states to determine their own marijuana laws and to respect those determinations, the Department of Justice today announced new guidelines for federal prosecutors that—while not fully protecting businesses and individuals that comply with state and local laws—appear to reduce risk of federal prosecution for those individuals and businesses. The Congressman made the following statement:

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that the University of Memphis and its faculty have been awarded a total of $895,398 in grant funding for three different projects. The funding announced today is from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
“This funding underscores the important role that University of Memphis scholars play in areas of national importance including science and education,” said Congressman Cohen.

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region (PPGMR) was awarded $265,000 by the U.S. Department of Health and Services (HHS). This funding will help PPGMR expand and enhance its existing High Impact HIV Prevention program, as well as allow PPGMR to expand its outreach to the Spanish-speaking community.
[MEMPHIS, TN] – After President Obama announced a new agenda to fight rising college costs and keep higher education within reach for middle class families this morning, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) highlighted his work to make college more affordable for Memphians and Tennesseans. When he served in the Tennessee Senate, Congressman Cohen led the fight to create the HOPE Scholarship program and in Washington he has fought to keep student loan rates down as well as to treat private student loan debt the same as other types of private loan debt.

This move by the DOJ carries exceptional weight in light of a recent Supreme Court ruling that left important provisions of the Voting Rights Act in limbo and raised questions about whether the civil rights of millions of Americans—including minority groups who have historically been oppressed—would remain protected.
[MEMPHIS, TN] -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Serenity Recovery Centers in Memphis has been awarded $520,000 in funding to expand and enhance substance abuse and HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention services for low-income African American women. The grant comes through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and will be used on Serenity’s collaborative Memphis Substance-Using Women’s Action Team (SWAT) project.
[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the Memphis Housing Authority has been awarded $82,732 in grant funding to provide rental assistance to homeless veterans. This funding comes through the Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program.
