[MEMPHIS, TN] - Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice and leading Congressional advocate for more justice through Presidential commutations, today commended President Obama’s decision to commute the sentences of 214 non-violent drug offenders incarcerated in federal prisons, including one Memphian. This is the largest single-day batch of commutations by a President since 1900. Under current federal law, many of these prisoners would have already completed their sentences and been released.

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Memphis International Airport received a $12,395,583 Airport Improvement Program grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the modernization of Concourse B, improvement of the access road and security enhancements.

“Memphis International Airport is a critically important transportation link in the Mid-South region,” said Congressman Cohen. “This funding will help the airport continue to make upgrades to serve travelers safely and efficiently for many years to come.”

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Girls Inc. of Memphis received a $372,960.00 federal Talent Search grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant will be used to strengthen the organization’s Education Talent Search (ETS) program which helps low-income, first-generation college bound students in grades 9-12 develop an awareness for the importance of postsecondary education.

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – In the wake of the police shootings of Alton Sperling in Louisiana and Philando Castile in Minnesota, there has been a surge in support in Congress for a bill to help reform policing and restore trust. The number of cosponsors of the Police Training and Independent Review Act (H.R. 2302) has grown from 62 cosponsors before the shooting of Alton Sterling on July 5th to 93 cosponsors today.

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Last night, the House of Representatives passed a bipartisan amendment to the Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill offered by Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN) and Congressman Bradley Byrne (R-AL) to increase funding for the Historic Preservation Fund by $2 million to be used for competitive grants to preserve the sites and stories of the Civil Rights Movement.
