Dear Friend,
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) commended Memphis’ selection as a participant in President Obama’s new ConnectHome initiative, which is aimed at accelerating broadband internet adoption by families and children through partnerships with local governments, private industry, non-profits, and other entities focused on tailoring internet access solutions to our community. Nationwide, both low-income and African-American households are significantly less likely to have internet access at home than other households.
[WASHINGTON, DC] – The U.S House of Representatives has approved legislation authored by Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) to cut short the “School-to-Prison Pipeline” and reduce youth incarceration in America by helping train school personnel in innovative conflict resolution methods that are less likely to result in non-violent juveniles entering the penal system. Currently, many school systems involve the police in non-violent incidents on school property, which helps feed the “school-to-prison” pipeline that is expensive and harmful to America’s youth.
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) welcomed recent White Station High School graduate Aylen Mercado to his Capitol Hill office to congratulate the student on winning this year’s Congressional Art Competition. As the Ninth District’s winner, Ms. Mercado’s piece, a mixed media of chalk pasted on black paper entitled “A Moment in the Life of a Memphis Bus Rider,” will hang in public view on Capitol Hill for the next year. Dear Friend,
[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) issued the following statement today regarding U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan’s decision to extend debt relief to a broader group of former students who attended the now-defunct for-profit Corinthian Colleges:
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Collierville native Thomas Carpenter recently joined the staff of Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) as an intern in the Congressman’s Capitol Hill office. During his May through August internship, Mr. Carpenter will work closely with Congressman Cohen’s legislative team and assist in other official duties such as helping with constituent requests, attending hearings and briefings, conducting legislative research, and providing tours of the Capitol complex to Memphians visiting Washington.
Insurmountable student loan debt has been making headlines in recent years, but it’s not news to Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN). While a state senator in Tennessee, Cohen learned of the plight of a former intern who was in burdened with student loan debt. “I saw that and realized how unfair it was,” Cohen told Blue Nation Review. “It was stifling her life and her advancement.”
Cohen was one of the main architects of the Hope Lottery Scholarship, which has raised over $2 billion to help Tennessee students pay for college since it began in 2003.
