WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that the University of Tennessee Heath Science Center (UTHSC) will receive two grants totaling $1,854,709 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The first, for $1,344,117, from the Office of the Director of the NIH, is for solution-oriented research identifying early-life modifiable risk factors for obesity and mental health problems in children under the director of Dr. Qi Zhao, a professor of Preventive Medicine.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that the University of Memphis will receive a grant of $599,826 for its Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training Program under the direction of Dr. Susan Neely-Barnes. The funding is from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. 

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“Federal investments in workforce development lead to greater productivity and higher job satisfaction. I congratulate the University for seeking and securing this grant funding.”

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced $2,543,243 in National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Both institutions received funding for research into hearing loss.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) will receive a grant of $466,103 from the National Eye Institute for research on sphingolipid signaling in vesicating ocular injury under the direction of Dr. Nawajes Mandal, a professor in the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Sphingolipids are a type of lipid found mainly in the membranes of cells which act on multiple different types of proteins to alter cellular functions.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will receive two National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants totaling $1,099,480. One, for $667,480 will go to Dr. Mario Halic for research on the structure and function of chromatin, from the National Institute of General Medical Services. Chromatin is the large complex of DNA and proteins responsible for condensing and packaging DNA into the nucleus of the cell. Dr.
