“Following numerous briefings with senior Administration officials and today’s nearly three-hour meeting with Vice President Biden at the White House, I paid close attention to President Obama’s address this evening.”

As you likely know, much attention this week has been focused on the growing turmoil in Syria—and whether or not the United States should use its military power in an effort to lessen the Syrian regime’s ability to use chemical weapons against its own people. [WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) joined Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13) and 52 Members of the House Democratic Caucus today in sending a letter to the President urging that the U.N. be allowed time to finish its job and that Congress be allowed to weigh in before any further action on Syria is taken.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today introduced the Research First Act to prevent and reverse the disastrous effects of sequestration cuts on critically important National Institutes of Health (NIH) research projects that could one day lead to cures for diseases that plague people around the globe. The legislation would replace more than $1.5 billion in crippling cuts to the NIH with Department of Defense funding that Pentagon leaders admit they don’t need.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) last night celebrated the passage of his amendment to cut the deficit and help limit the risk of taxpayer dollars being wasted or stolen in Afghanistan. The Congressman’s amendment to the to the FY2014 Defense Department Appropriations bill, which reduces funding to the Afghan Infrastructure Fund by $139 million, passed by a bipartisan vote of 249-173. [WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that his legislation to bring transparency and balance to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, or FISA Court, has gained the bipartisan support of eleven Members of Congress. The FISA Court Accountability Act would give the American people, through their elected representatives, a voice in who serves on the court we entrust to balance our nation’s need for national security with every American’s right to personal privacy.
