Bills aimed at improving police-community relations, diversity training

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE), also known as the Helsinki Commission, today participated in an international virtual meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's Parliamentary Assembly and spoke of the need for repressive governments to promote freedom.

In his remarks, Congressman Cohen talked about the pernicious allure of drug abuse in repressive societies and a fact-finding trip he made to Belarus. He said:

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen, a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee and its Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security today questioned expert witnesses in a hearing on "The Rise of Domestic Terrorism in America."

During his five minutes questioning expert witnesses, Congressman Cohen said the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters and white nationalists was just the most recent example of the phenomenon that has been increasing in recent years. He said:

Congressman Cohen focused his questions to the panel of expert witnesses on the need for more federal appellate court judgeships and importance of a diverse federal judiciary that fully reflects the American people.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the Memphis Housing Authority will receive $6,869,040 and the Millington Housing Authority will receive $207,199 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Capital Fund Program.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today questioned expert witnesses about the treatment of African Americans during traffic stops. He noted that his Police Training and Independent Review Act, which was made part of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act last year, would address some of the problems associated with such stops.
