WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) voted today to authorize the Judiciary Committee to subpoena Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker if he fails to appear or refuses to answer questions at a scheduled oversight hearing on Friday. The committee approved a resolution to authorize the subpoena by a vote of 23 to 13.

Johnson demanding answers about TVA's announcement that ratepayers might have to pay for the misdeeds of the contractor it used for cleanup work at its Kingston plant, following the nation's worst coal ash spill.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) paid tribute to Memphis disc jockey George "GK" Klein, a friend of Elvis Presley since they met at Humes High School at age 13. Klein was a groomsman in Elvis' wedding and was a pall bearer at his 1977 funeral. Klein died Tuesday evening at 83.

WASHINGTON – Congressmen Steve Cohen (TN-09), Danny Davis (IL-07) and Eric Swalwell (CA-15) today introduced the Private Student Loan Bankruptcy Fairness Act. This legislation would restore fairness in student lending by treating privately issued student loans the same as other types of private debt are treated in bankruptcy. Until 2005, this type of student loan debt was dischargeable in bankruptcy, but a change to the bankruptcy code that year removed that consumer protection.
