WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today issued the following statement on the GOP’s controversial multi-year surface transportation proposal to reauthorize our country’s highway, highway safety, transit, and rail programs. The most recent multi-year surface transportation bill (SAFETEA-LU) expired in September 2009, and the program has continued to operate through temporary extensions. Breaking with Committee precedent and tradition, the current proposal was drafted by the Majority with no consultation or input from the Minority.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today said the recent pipeline oil spill in Montana is a preview for larger, more significant oil spills if the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline proposal is approved. TransCanada – which supplies some of the biggest oil companies in the world with toxic tar sands oil – is seeking State Department approval to build the Keystone XL Pipeline, a new 2,000 mile pipeline from Alberta, Canada to the Gulf Coast in Texas.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today praised the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice for pursuing justice in the Mickey Wright case on a hate crime statute. Mickey Wright -- a Shelby County Code Enforcement Inspector -- was killed and transported to Mississippi where he was dismembered and burned in 2001. This was the first time a federal hate crime was successfully prosecuted in Tennessee.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) announced that on July 1st the interest rate on subsidized student loans will be cut to 3.4% -- the last of four steps to cut this interest rate in half over four years, under the 2007 College Cost Reduction and Access Act enacted by a Democratic-led Congress. Due to these cuts, the typical student borrower who started college in 2008 will have saved $2,570 over the life of their loan. Millions of students take out subsidized student loans each year.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that Shelby County has received an agricultural disaster designation from U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack because of damage and losses due to severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding that began on April 23 and continued on. Many other counties in Tennessee will also receive federal assistance.
