MEMPHIS -- Over the past several weeks, Congressman Cohen's office has received a flood of calls from constituents regarding their ability to receive the economic stimulus payments that Congress passed as part of the CARES Act. Social Security recipients, those who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and other individuals who do not typically file taxes were told they would be required to go through additional hurdles in order to receive this much-needed aid.
MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today commended Governor Bill Lee for finally heeding the advice of public health officials and making his shelter-in-place order mandatory. Congressman Cohen had expressed concern that Tennessee continued to lose valuable time flattening the curve and increasing the possibility of exposure to the virus. Tennessee recently made national headlines for failing to heed the advice of health experts and not demand that non-essential workers and others stay at home.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a member of the Committee on Science, Space and Technology, today announced that the University of Memphis' Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI) will receive a $675,000 grant from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The funding supports CERI's cooperative agreement with USGS in operating the Advanced National Seismic System.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today commended Jayda and Anaya Murray of Cordova for winning the Congressional App Competition for the 9th Congressional District of Tennessee with their Safety U app. The app presents a series of unsafe situations an entering freshman might encounter at college and offers a range of options for dealing with them.
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Aviation, today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation will provide the Millington-Memphis Airport $10 million in supplemental funding to rehabilitate runways.
This funding is part of $779 million in supplemental funding for 127 small and rural airports announced by U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.

WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded $6,796,656 in grants to Memphis and Shelby County public housing agencies under its Capital Fund program.
"Increasing access to quality, affordable housing is crucial for Memphis and Memphians," said Congressman Cohen. "This new federal funding will help the Memphis Housing Authority modernize its housing and improve the quality of life for many residents."
WASHINGTON – Today, in a hearing on highway safety in the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure's Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, Congressman Steve Cohen provided a statement encouraging the committee to consider his four bipartisan highway safety bills.
"According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 37,133 people lost their lives in accidents on U.S. roadways in 2017. That's 100 people dying each day in motor vehicle crashes. We must do better, said Congressman Cohen.
U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen has asked for a congressional hearing on the impacts of coal-burning energy plants and coal ash dumps on health, groundwater, and aquatic life.
Cohen wants the matter heard before the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, putting the request in a Monday letter to its ranking members and to members of the House Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment.
