WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN) today announced the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $16,710,850 to Memphis International Airport for terminal and taxiway improvements, overall upgrades, and snow removal equipment for next winter.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN) yesterday introduced legislation to collect unspent federal funds from orphan transportation projects and use them to reduce the federal deficit. The Memphis Congressman spoke on the House floor last week about his initiative.

“As the economic engine of the Mid-South, it is crucial that Memphis International continues to make upgrades to maintain its status as the world’s premier cargo airport,” said Congressman Cohen. “These new federal monies will provide the airport with the necessary funding to make significant upgrades throughout the facility.”

The federal funds will be used to improve terminal buildings and taxiways and make security enhancements. The funds will also be used to acquire snow removal equipment for next winter.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded Memphis $471,609 for Elvis Presley Boulevard Improvements.

“Elvis Presley Boulevard is an important thoroughfare in Memphis,” said Congressman Cohen. “These new federal funds will be used to study how to enhance livability, reduce congestion, and improve overall transportation.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded Memphis a Community Challenge Grant worth $1,260,905 for development of an Aerotropolis/Lamar Corridor Master Plan. HUD worked with the U.S. Department of Transportation in awarding these new federal funds, which will focus on spurring economic development, rehabilitating blighted and vacant properties, and improving transportation infrastructure.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) will receive $7 million through the State of Good Repair Program to purchase twelve replacement buses. The new buses will be hybrid electric.

Washington, D.C .— U.S. Representatives Albio Sires (D-NJ), Steve Cohen (D-TN), Laura Richardson (D-CA), and Adam Smith (D-WA) recently introduced legislation to create a national freight transportation policy. The “Focusing Resources, Economic Investment, and Guidance to Help Transportation (FREIGHT) Act of 2010” will implement a strategic plan to guide the goods movement, create an office devoted to freight planning within the Department of Transportation (DOT), and establish a competitive grant program for freight transportation projects.
