“When it comes to moving boxes and freight, no city in America rivals Memphis’s efficiency and effectiveness,” Congressman Cohen said. “However, when it comes to transporting our own citizens, Memphis has a long way to go. The legislation I have introduced will help Memphians have mobility throughout the city.”

“I’m pleased to know that the Federal Railroad Administration is committed to undertaking this feasibility study next year. As added insurance, I pushed to include additional funding in next year’s transportation budget to ensure that there will be no further delay,” Congressman Cohen said. “Memphis is the transportation hub of the nation. We’re home to the largest cargo airline, highways, rail yards, the Mississippi River, but we don’t have high speed rail.

“Maintaining the navigation channel to Memphis Harbor is absolutely vital to the flow of commerce and promoting economic development. That’s why I fought hard to make sure that Army Corps of Engineers has the funding it needs to get this important job done,” Congressman Cohen said. “This bill will also help the University of Memphis to move forward with its plans to promote sustainable energy on the campus. Finally, I also want to commend President Obama for including $100,000 in federal funding to begin the process of a Storm Water Management Study for Memphis.”

“Each day the Memphis Area Transit Authority transports tens of thousands of people around the city and Shelby County safely and efficiently. These funds will allow the Authority to purchase 35 state-of-the-art busses and technology to improve rider safety and the efficiency of the system,” Congressman Cohen said. “Access to affordable and reliable transportation is crucial to promoting economic development. I was proud to support the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and am grateful that these funds are moving quickly to our district.”
