Washington, D.C. - House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) and Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice Ranking Member Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) today released the following joint statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt decision, which ruled that Texas’ abortion law was unconstitutional:

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN), Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), Congressman Tony Cárdenas (D-CA) and Congresswoman Ann Wagner (R-MO) yesterday introduced H.R. 5405, the Stop, Observe, Ask and Respond (SOAR) to Health and Wellness Act. This bipartisan legislation would provide health care professionals at all levels training on how to identify and appropriately treat human trafficking victims. It is a companion bill to S. 1446, which was introduced by Senators Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) and Susan Collins (R-ME).

On Monday, February 22 from 9:00am-10:30am, I will be hosting a roundtable discussion at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital with local, state, and federal officials on how to protect babies from the Zika virus and other threats to their health. While the Zika virus is an emerging danger in the US, there are also other, more prevalent dangers to the health of a baby. Representatives from the March of Dimes will discuss ways to reduce premature birth.

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region (PPGMR) was awarded $265,000 by the U.S. Department of Health and Services (HHS). This funding will help PPGMR expand and enhance its existing High Impact HIV Prevention program, as well as allow PPGMR to expand its outreach to the Spanish-speaking community.
