Arts
As a lifelong patron of the arts, Congressman Cohen has made it a priority to support artists and creative institutions both locally and nationally throughout his career. The arts enrich our communities, drive economic growth, and inspire the innovation that keeps America moving forward. He is proud to have received an A+ rating on the Americans for the Arts Action Fund Congressional Scorecard for his consistent support of arts funding and cultural investment.
Art in Memphis
Memphis is a city built on creativity from the birthplace of blues, soul, and rock ’n’ roll to the thriving visual, literary, and performing arts scenes that define our culture today. The arts are not just part of Memphis’ identity; they are an essential part of its economy, supporting thousands of local jobs and drawing millions of visitors each year.
As a State Senator, Congressman Cohen worked to establish the “Art is… a Rainbow” specialty license plate, which continues to help fund the Tennessee Arts Commission and arts education programs across our state. He remains deeply committed to ensuring that Memphis’s creative community continues to flourish and that local artists have the resources they need to succeed.
Investing in Memphis’s Creative Future
Congressman Cohen has helped to secure federal funding for arts and cultural institutions across Memphis such as the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Stax Museum of American Soul Music, New Ballet Ensemble, Opera Memphis, Inc., and the Metal Museum, among others. These investments preserve our city’s cultural heritage, expand arts access for all Memphians, and ensure that the creative spirit that defines Memphis continues to thrive for generations to come.
Supporting the National Endowment for the Arts
As a longtime supporter of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Congressman Cohen has consistently opposed efforts to cut its funding. The NEA plays a critical role in bringing arts opportunities to every corner of our country from major cultural institutions to small community theaters and public art programs. He will continue to advocate for strong, stable funding for the NEA and other federal programs that sustain jobs and creative expression in Memphis and beyond.
Arts in Education
The arts are not an “add-on” to core education, they are a cornerstone of a complete education. Congressman Cohen has long championed efforts to expand access to arts education in public schools and ensure that creative learning receives the same level of support as science, technology, engineering, and math.
Arts education fosters critical thinking, confidence, and creativity — skills that prepare our students for success in the modern workforce. Congressman Cohen will continue working to ensure that every child has the opportunity to explore their creativity in the classroom and beyond.
Congressman Cohen has also advocated for participation in the Congressional Arts Competition. Learn more about the program and how to apply here.
