WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital a grant worth $437,500 for research into diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolism. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) will distribute the award.
MEMPHIS, TN – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted a waiver until August 31 to allow winter-grade fuel to be sold in Shelby County in the wake of the Valero refinery explosion, which has created a reduced fuel supply throughout the region. Yesterday the Congressman sent a letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson expressing his support for Governor Bill Haslam’s request for a waiver. Attached is the letter EPA sent granting the waiver.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today said the deal he helped solidify between the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) and the Great American Steamboat Company (GASC) to bring the “American Queen” back to Memphis would create almost 300 new jobs in the Bluff City. Congressman Cohen secured a 30-day extension from U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood earlier this summer to prevent the deal from falling through.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center two grants worth $523,415 for research. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) will distribute $378,258 to fund the Health Science Center’s research on the impact of Medicare payment rule changes on hospital practices.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Saturday, Congressmen Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) and Jim McDermott (D-WA-7) introduced The Limiting Investor and Homeowner Loss in Foreclosure Act of 2011, legislation that would help struggling families keep their homes. The legislation would clarify the authority of bankruptcy courts to operate mortgage modification programs.
