WASHINGTON – In advance of Thursday's observance of the Fourth of July, Congressman Cohen (TN-09) released the following statement:
"I want to wish all residents of the 9th Congressional District a happy, festive and safe Fourth of July. This is the 243rd anniversary of our Declaration of Independence and of an experiment in self-government by the people, for the people, that is the envy of the world. As we Memphians enjoy the barbecues and fireworks celebrating independence, let's also reflect on all those who built our country and protected our freedom."

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, today observed the 55th anniversary of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 and made the following statement:

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) reacted to today's 5-4 U.S. Supreme Court's decision not to resolve the issue of partisan gerrymandering by pointing to a Congressional solution to the problem: his H.R. 124, the John Tanner Fairness and Independence in Redistricting Act.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) will be receiving a research grant of $742,480 from the Department of Health and Human Services to study diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism. UTHSC has received $8,908,184 in federal grants so far this year.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, presided over a hearing on "Continuing Challenges to the Voting Rights Act Since Shelby County v. Holder." The Act, repeatedly reauthorized on a bipartisan basis, most recently in 2006, was undermined by the 2013 ruling in the Shelby County case. The Act has not been reauthorized since the ruling because bipartisan support has evaporated.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Methodist LeBonheur Community Outreach will be receiving a grant payment of $1,050,000 in its ongoing teenage pregnancy prevention program, "Be Proud! Be Responsible!"
The funding underwrites the program through June of 2020.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, today questioned election law and Russian intelligence experts about conclusions drawn by Special Counsel Robert Mueller in his review of Russian meddling in the 2016 elections. WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the University of Memphis will be receiving $199,673 from the National Science Foundation to underwrite research by Mechanical Engineering Professor Ranganathan Gopalakrishnan on "dusty plasmas." Dusty plasmas are low temperature plasmas with charged microparticles suspended in them.
