This week, President Obama outlined his vision for the next year during his State of the Union address, I was selected to be the lead Democrat on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, I successfully fought against another Republican attempt to unconstitutionally undermine a woman's right to choose, and I joined Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., to introduce a constitutional amendment to guarantee the right to vote.

While Congress has adjourned for the holidays I supported President Obama’s actions this week to restore liberty to individuals unjustly imprisoned, including a Memphian, and to reopen diplomatic relations with Cuba. I was also relieved that Governor Haslam finally announced a plan to cover additional low income people in Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. This week, I joined President Obama at the White House and on Air Force One during his trip to Nashville, and each time I invited him to Memphis. In addition, Congress approved $5 million that I secured to help fight our backlog of untested rape kits, and I introduced legislation to close a loophole that prevents us from effectively identifying and addressing fatal police interactions.
