My thoughts, prayers, and condolences are with the victims of yesterday’s Malaysia Airlines tragedy as well as with their families, friends, and loved ones. We must now investigate and determine the facts of this tragic event and hold accountable those responsible.

This week, I hosted my third “Building a Healthier Memphis” forum, delivered a letter from President Obama to the National Civil Rights Museum, spoke on the House floor advocating for the renewal of the Highway Trust Fund and began a contest to replace my Facebook cover photo. This week marked the 50^th anniversary of President Lyndon Johnson signing the landmark Civil Rights Act into law, a new report was released showing just how many Tennesseans are hurting because Governor Haslam refuses to act on TennCare expansion, and I hosted my annual Procurement Fair to help Memphis small businesses compete. This week marked one year from a misguided Supreme Court decision that gutted the Voting Rights Act, I brought a senior VA official to Memphis to address our veteran community’s concerns, spoke on the House Floor about the urgent need to restore the protections of the Voting Rights Act, and met with a talented young Memphis artist who won this year’s Congressional Art Competition in the Ninth District. This week marked the 149th anniversary of Juneteenth, my work to bring senior VA officials to Memphis paid off, and I voted to ensure that our troops have the resources they need to stay safe and protected as they defend the United States from international threats. I also announced my next “Building a Healthier Memphis” wellness event, and a new report came out that shows Tennesseans are saving almost 70% on their health insurance through the Affordable Care Act’s tax credits. This week, the House passed my amendment to help prevent children from going hungry, President Obama moved to help more than 100,000 Tennesseans burdened with student loan debt, and a new report showed that 60,000 Ninth District citizens will receive a raise if Congress increases the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour.
