Dear Friend,

This week at a House Judiciary Committee hearing I asked Attorney General Eric Holder to free former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman from prison because he was the victim of a politically motivated prosecution. And House Republicans voted for the 37th time to repeal the Affordable Care Act, legislation I was proud to support that is helping millions across our country.

This week I spoke on the House floor about the negative effects sequestration is having on Pre-K and Head Start programs in Memphis and across the country. I also spoke and voted against the GOP “Working Families Flexibility Act” – legislation that only offers greater flexibility to employers and lower wages to workers.

This week I spoke on the House floor about the importance of funding the National Institutes of Health (NIH), our country’s foremost medical research center which has helped millions across the country suffering from heart disease, cancer, HIV/AIDS, Diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and Post Polio. Through sequestration, Republicans are looking to cut funding for NIH by more than $1.6 billion.

Dear Friend,

Last weekend Memphis lost one of its giants – former Criminal Court Clerk, County Commissioner and City Councilwoman Minerva Johnican. She was always a steadfast supporter of my candidacy for public office, which meant much coming from someone who had walked with me all along the way. My life has been blessed and richer for having counted Minerva as my friend.
