WASHINGTON, D.C – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today issued the following statement after learning of the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (AZ-8). The Congresswoman was shot at a public event in Tucson, Arizona by a gunman who began firing indiscriminately into the crowd. At least five other people have been killed, and others have been injured – including members of Giffords’ staff and a federal judge.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) $307,100 for cancer treatment research.

“The University of Tennessee Health Science Center has a long history of helping Memphians and other Tennesseans fight cancer,” said Congressman Cohen. “These new federal funds will help provide the Health Science Center with the funds it needs to continue its cancer treatment research and help people fight cancer.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today voted to support legislation that would repeal a ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the U.S. military. The measure now heads to the Senate for consideration.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) recently issued a letter to House Committee on Ways and Means Chairman Sander Levin and Ranking Member Dave Camp urging them to “include a two year renewal of tax incentives for empowerment zones (EZs), renewal communities (RCs), and enterprise communities (ECs) in any upcoming legislation to extend expiring tax measures.” Memphis is a renewal community.
