[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today expressed strong concerns about Governor Bill Haslam’s recently-announced plan to raid funds from the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship surplus account to create a new government program, disincentivize high-achieving young people from enrolling at 4-year institutions of higher learning, and make it more difficult for Tennessee families to send their children to the best universities and colleges in the state.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Memphis native and Christian Brothers High School graduate Barrett Heffington recently began a 4-month long internship in Congressman Steve Cohen’s (TN-09) Washington, D.C. office. In addition to several other responsibilities, interns help the Congressman with constituent requests, assist with his legislative duties, attend hearings and briefings, perform important research, and give tours of the U.S. Capitol building to Shelby County residents visiting Washington.

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Memphis Mayor A C Wharton, and Shelby County Trustee David Lenoir will join United Way of the Mid-South President Bryce Haugsdahl to highlight the importance of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) tomorrow afternoon at the grand opening one of 15 new tax assistance sites located throughout Shelby County. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites will offer guidance and services free of charge to Shelby County citizens looking to ensure they get the tax refund they deserve.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) will host Memphian and Congressional Black Caucus Foundation “Emerging Leaders” Intern Ryun Edward Jackson as his guest for President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address. Mr. Jackson, a Ninth District constituent and 2013 graduate of the University of Memphis who majored in Political Science and African American Studies, also interned in the Congressman’s Memphis office last year.
