MEMPHIS, TN, July 14, 2011 – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the awarding of more than $6.2 million in national environmental workforce development and job training grants to 21 grantees to recruit, train, and place unemployed, predominantly low-income residents in polluted areas.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today introduced the Jobs for Urban Sustainability and Training (JUST) in America Act of 2011, legislation that would create jobs and provide training to Americans struggling to find work by eliminating tax breaks to major oil companies and using those funds for public works and jobs training programs for unemployed workers.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today offered an amendment to the Clean Water Cooperative Federalism Act of 2011 (H.R. 2018) that would ensure the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) maintains its existing authority to regulate pipelines crossing streambeds. The Cohen measure was accepted and added to the bill.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that Girls Inc. of Memphis has received two talent search grants totaling $610,535. The two grants, one worth $257,769 and the other worth $352,766, will be used to strengthen the organization’s Education Talent Search (ETS) program, which helps low income, first generation college bound students in grades 9-12 develop an awareness for the importance of postsecondary education.

The new federal funds will be distributed by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
