MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) this evening updated a previous statement on today’s gunfire at Margolin Hebrew Academy after new details about the alleged shooter began to emerge. He made the following statement:
MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that the University of Memphis will receive a $220,133 grant from the National Science Foundation for research on privacy in the transmission of encrypted data over wide-area networks. The research is being conducted by Professor Christos Papadopoulos, who holds the Sparks Family Chair of Excellence in Global Research Leadership in the Department of Computer Science.
MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today reacted with shock and sadness after hearing that the Margolin Hebrew Academy-Feinstone Yeshiva of the South on White Station was reportedly hit by gunfire this afternoon, and made the following statement:
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), who represents Memphis, today welcomed today’s announcement that the Department of Justice (DOJ) will investigate if the Memphis Police Department has a “pattern and practice” of discrimination in policing.
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) today introduced the bicameral Equal Employment for All Act, which would prohibit employers from using credit reports to evaluate job applicants.
Congressman Cohen, who has introduced the measure in each of the past five Congresses, made the following statement:
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today offered an amended version of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Salary Transparency Act that he and Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-2) introduced last week at a markup of the legislation. The full committee passed the bill by a voice vote, and it is now eligible for consideration by the full House of Representatives.
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today questioned Drug Enforcement Administrator Anne Milgram about the need to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level and about the agency’s approach to stopping fentanyl trafficking. Milgram was testifying at a Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance oversight hearing.
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen TN-9), a past Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, today spoke at a hearing of the renamed subcommittee on “gender-affirming” health care. He raised questions about the direction the subcommittee is taking in raising culture war issues and defended the civil rights of transgender people.
In his remarks, Congressman Cohen said in part:
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), the Ranking Member of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the Helsinki Commission, questioned expert witnesses at a hearing titled “Rescuing Ukrainian Children and Women from Russia’s Aggression.” Congressman Cohen focused his line of questioning on the Ukrainian children abducted to Russia and efforts by Papal Envoy Matteo Zuppi to have them reunited with their parents.
