WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee and Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties, today spoke in favor of and voted to advance to a House floor vote the Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural (CROWN) Hair Act, a measure prohibiting discrimination against those displaying a natural hair style. Such discrimination in schools and in employment is often based on racial prejudice.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced two grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) totaling $4,192,346 to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC).

The St. Jude grant for $1,077,000, from the National Cancer Institute, is for research on the progression of leukemia. The UTHSC grant for $3,115,346, from the Director's Office at NIH, is for radiobiology research.

Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey introduced a companion bill in the Senate. The measure, the Reducing Obesity in Youth Act, has implications for the future health of American children and has a bearing on future national health care costs and national security.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties, today spoke against an amendment to the Budget Reconciliation bill during the full Committee mark up of the measure. The amendment by Congressman Tom McClintock (CA-04) would have allowed community violence prevention grantees to ignore President Biden's vaccination requirement announced last week.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today filed formal comments with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services opposing the block grant-style waiver for Tennessee's Medicaid program, known as the TennCare III waiver. The unhealthy waiver, granted by the Trump administration as it was leaving office without public comment, would be a "a devastating blow to Tennesseans who rely on Medicaid to meet their basic health needs." TennCare is Tennessee's Medicaid program.
