Hooks Job Corps Center, I announced more than $2 million in federal funds to help support research at the University of Memphis and St. Jude, and I continued my work to stop the excessive use of force by local police departments around the nation. [MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced two grants for Memphis-area non-profits totaling $1,355,000 in federal funding to help prevent local low-income veterans and their families from becoming homeless and to find housing for those that already have. Today’s grant funding is through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program, which Congressman Cohen has worked to secure funding for.
Dear Friend,

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) made the following statement following the resignation of Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki:
“The brave men and women who have risked life and limb for our nation’s security deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, and we owe it to them to ensure they receive the finest medical care possible. We know for many veterans, our commitment to them has not been fulfilled. Veterans and their families have suffered.”
Dear Friend,
This week, I spoke with more than 15,000 Memphians in a telephone town hall meeting, Sheri Lipman was confirmed as a District Court Judge (without a single Senator voting against her) after I recommended her to President Obama, and Shelby County was awarded more than $5 million to help fight HIV and AIDS. Dear Friend,

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that would help put an end to the for-profit college industry’s predatory marketing campaigns and aggressive recruiting of veterans, servicemembers and their families. The Protecting Our Students and Taxpayers (POST) Act, which U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Tom Harkin (D-IA) have also introduced in the Senate, would eliminate the loophole that allows these proprietary companies to receive more than 90% of their revenue from the federal government.
Dear Friend,
In his 1996 State of the Union Address, President Bill Clinton drew the attention of the nation to a man sitting in the House gallery watching that night. Richard Dean was a Vietnam veteran who had worked at the Social Security Administration for more than two decades. Mr. Dean was at work in the Federal Building in Oklahoma City when a car-bomb that ultimately killed 169 people exploded just outside. He ran back into the building not once, not twice, but four times and saved the lives of three women.
