[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) released the following statement upon learning of the video released by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claiming to show an execution of journalist Steven Sotloff:

“I was saddened to learn of the latest video purporting to show the execution by ISIS of journalist Steven Sotloff. If it proves true, the beheading of a second American journalist is further proof that ISIS, with a desire to create a caliphate, is a threat to America and to democracy everywhere.”

Hooks Job Corps Center, I announced more than $2 million in federal funds to help support research at the University of Memphis and St. Jude, and I continued my work to stop the excessive use of force by local police departments around the nation. [MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced two grants for Memphis-area non-profits totaling $1,355,000 in federal funding to help prevent local low-income veterans and their families from becoming homeless and to find housing for those that already have. Today’s grant funding is through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program, which Congressman Cohen has worked to secure funding for.

“The brave men and women who have risked life and limb for our nation’s security deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, and we owe it to them to ensure they receive the finest medical care possible. We know for many veterans, our commitment to them has not been fulfilled. Veterans and their families have suffered.”
