WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) will receive a $432,218 grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for research into neurological disorders.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"I'm pleased our medical school can continue its lifesaving work on neurological disorders in the midst of this pandemic. I'm sure that the grant underwriting this research will result in important breakthroughs while keeping dedicated scientists working in their labs."

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a member of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, today announced that Southwest Tennessee Community College will receive a grant of $1,859,883 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to increase student success in community college mathematics through instructional change.

Southwest is one of eight community colleges participating in the five-year project aimed at improving instruction and retention rates.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the University of Memphis will receive a grant of $337,088 from the U.S. Department of Education to work on a technology-based reading comprehension system for adult literacy students.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"With one in six adults reading at a low proficiency level, this grant will address a critical national need. I'm pleased this funding will put the U of M in the vanguard of adult education programs addressing this problem."

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that Amiracle Sanaa Laney of Cordova, an 11th grader at the Tennessee Virtual School, has won the Congressional Art Competition for the 9th Congressional District. Her painting, "Beauty in the Middle of a Pandemic" will hang in the U.S. Capitol along with the winners from other congressional districts around the country.

The grants are designed to build the capacity of African American museums and support the growth and development of museum professionals.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will receive a grant of $3,686,681 from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for research into SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus) transmission and immunity. The Congressman also announced the University of Memphis will receive a grant of $415,740 from the National Cancer Institute for cancer detection and diagnosis research.
