Dear Friend,

There were no votes in Congress this week and I enjoyed spending it at home in Memphis, where I helped open the new Fairway Manor affordable housing complex, had the opportunity to speak with elementary school students about the importance of public service, and participated in a conference focused on ensuring that our community’s cemeteries are properly maintained and respected. [WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis has been awarded a total of $795,651 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for three projects.

“These funds will help continue the important work being done by the skilled researchers at the UT Health Science Center in Memphis,” said Congressman Cohen.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice and a strong advocate for reform of the nation’s racially-biased criminal justice system, today introduced legislation to give rehabilitated ex-offenders who have repaid their debts to society a fair chance to compete in today’s job market. The Congressman’s legislation, the Re-Integration of Ex-Offenders Through Technology Act, would incorporate technology literacy programs into the U.S.

[MEMPHIS, TN] – On Thursday morning, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) hosted a reception at his office in the Clifford Davis/Odell Horton Federal Building to congratulate four Ninth District students who have been accepted to attend United States Military Service Academies this fall. [MEMPHIS, TN] – Following the United States Supreme Court’s decision in Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action to uphold Michigan Proposal 2, which reopens the door to discrimination in public education by prohibiting affirmative action in the admission process, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) released the following statement.

[WASHINGTON, DC] - Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced today that University of Memphis Assistant Professor of Chemistry William Alexander was awarded $49,937 in federal funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for a research project. The funding will be used to develop quantum chemical computational models able to accurately determine how hazardous chemicals interact with various natural and manmade materials surfaces present in domestic water systems.
