MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) will receive a grant of $615,455 to study eosinophils – a type of white blood cell – and antibacterial immunity in the lungs. The funding comes from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that the University of Memphis will receive U.S. Navy funding of $21,184,191 over 48 months to develop an Unmanned Systems Degraded Environment Facility for testing drones in complex and controllable airflow patterns. The funding was awarded based on competitive bids solicited in 2022 and will produce a facility for testing unmanned vehicles and Naval simulators under degraded visual conditions.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that two University of Memphis professors will receive $525,000 in grants from the National Science Foundation. Thomas Goebel, an assistant professor at the University’s Center for Earthquake Research and Information, will receive grants of $425,000 and $50,000 for seismic research projects. Jessica Jennings, an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, will receive $50,000 to study improved tissue regeneration.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that Rhodes College will receive a $502,946 grant from the National Science Foundation to study the impact of concentrations of carbon dioxide on dimorphic fungi. The research, under the direction of Assistant Professor of Biology Qian Shen, will also involve undergraduate students at LeMoyne-Owen College, and could lead to breakthroughs in combatting life-threatening fungal infections and reduce crop damage from fungal agents.
