WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that Shelby County has received an agricultural disaster designation from U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack because of damage and losses due to severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding that began on April 23 and continued on. Many other counties in Tennessee will also receive federal assistance.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded the University of Memphis $816,756 over the course of four years for a project entitled “Collaborative Research: Northern Embayment Lithosphere Experiment (NELE).” The program deploys seismic instruments to record seismic waves during CAT scans to determine what is causing tectonic depression in the region.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today voted to support the SPILL Act, legislation he cosponsored to reform maritime liability laws -- the Death on the High Seas Act, the Jones Act and the Limitation on Liability Act -- to ensure that the families of those killed or injured in the BP Oil Spill and other such tragedies are justly compensated for their losses.
“Because the Deepwater Horizon was flagged in the Marshall Islands, it was subject to limited safety examinations and minimal oversight, levels that pale in comparison to U.S. vessels. If the BP oil spill has taught us anything, it is that we cannot permit companies to cut corners at the expense of safety,” said Congressman Cohen. “My bill would ensure that only American flagged vessels, all of which meet the highest safety standards in the world, can conduct offshore drilling in U.S. waters.”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN) joined with Congressman Peter Welch (D-VT) and representatives from the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Sierra Club and Corporate Ethics International to urge Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to oppose the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline project proposed by TransCanada. The controversial project would extend 2,000 miles across the United States from Alberta, Canada to the Gulf Coast in Texas.
