Information regarding my stance on Environmental issues.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – After BP announced its intention to move forward with a payment to shareholders, Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN) joined a coalition of House members led by Congressman Peter Welch (D-VT) in calling on CEO Tony Hayward to suspend dividend payments and advertising campaigns until it remedies the environmental disaster it caused in the Gulf of Mexico.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today voted to support legislation (S. 3473) that would permit the Coast Guard to obtain one or more advances from the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to underwrite federal response to the Gulf Coast oil spill. Under current law, the Coast Guard can only draw up to $100 million from the fund to finance emergency response efforts in the immediate aftermath of an accident, and those funds are about to expire. Under the measure, BP would be required to repay these funds.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-09) was recognized by Environment America for having a perfect voting record on environmental issues in 2009. The Congressman was the only member of the Tennessee delegation to receive a perfect score.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today issued the following statement in celebration of Earth Day:
“Our planet is the most precious resource we have and it is vital that we do everything in our power to preserve our environment for future generations. If we are going to improve the air we breathe and the water we drink, we must combat the pollution that destroys our lungs and ruins our atmosphere.
Last night, I was proud to vote for a major, comprehensive energy bill that will lower costs to consumers and American taxpayers, invest in renewable energy sources to create American jobs, expand domestic energy supply and create greater energy efficiency and conservation.
This is the home-grown, American-owned energy policy that American consumers and businesses have been waiting for and deserve. This compromise legislation will make our country safer, more secure and less dependent on foreign sources of oil.
“I am thankful that the President stepped up and did the right thing by signing this historic piece of legislation into law,” said Congressman Cohen. “For the first time since 1975, the Democratic Congress has increased CAFE standards, and I think that’s something that we can all be proud of.”
