[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressmen Scott DesJarlais, M.D. (TN-04) and Steve Cohen (TN-09) today introduced their bipartisan Enhancing Safety at Military Installations Act with the support of the entire Tennessee House Delegation. This legislation would require the Department of Defense to issue a directive permitting members of the Armed Forces who have received firearms training and are authorized to use firearms to carry military-issued firearms on bases and recruitment facilities.

“Today’s attack in Chattanooga that killed four Marines and injured several others is distressing, and I am keeping a close eye on the developments. Being that the scene was a military installation and the victims were military personnel, it appears that this was an attack on our nation. My sympathies go out to the victims and their families.”

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) issued the following statement regarding Secretary of State John Kerry’s decision to remove Cuba’s designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism:

“Two decades ago our government determined the Cuban military poses no threat to us, while the State Department has found no evidence the Cubans provide support or training to terrorists—and there are even signs that Cuba is, in fact, taking steps to fight terrorism. That is why I have worked to normalize relations with Cuba since I was elected to Congress.
