WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today applauded House passage of the Music Modernization Act, a bill updating provisions of federal copyright law to account for the transformation of the music industry by the internet, music streaming and smart phones. It also expands federal copyright protection to pre-1972 sound recordings to ensure that legacy artists are appropriately compensated for the use of their work. The measure passed 415 to 0.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) praised the quick-wittedness of James Shaw Jr., a bystander who intervened in Sunday morning's deadly Waffle House shooting in Nashville. Congressman Cohen also commended Nashville Mayor David Briley for calling for comprehensive gun reform after the use of an assault-style rifle in the pre-dawn attack.

"Rabbi Grossman was loved and respected and was a strong voice for Baron Hirsch and the entire Jewish community both in Memphis and across our country. He was a learned man with a gift for oratory whose life was dedicated to service."

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today recognized Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, with his Congressional colleagues. Congressman Cohen recalled that, at the urging of his friend and constituent Ira Lipman, he sponsored and passed legislation to create the Tennessee's Holocaust Commission as a state senator in 1984. He has been a consistent supporter of legislation and other Congressional efforts to assure the perpetual memory of those lost in the Holocaust.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has awarded a federal research grant totaling nearly $300,000 to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). These funds will help support UTHSC research to identify potential new drugs in cancer therapies through their Anticancer Strategies Targeting the Autotaxin-LPA Receptor Axis program.
