It is important to provide all children and families access to a quality, affordable education and healthcare to help them secure a prosperous future. As a member of Congress, I have championed for legislation that makes it easier for Americans to balance work and family responsibilities, expands support for foster youth care, and serves the needs of children with special behavioral health needs and/or medical disabilities. I also firmly believe that assisting families in their pursuit of higher education is critical for our nation's growth and success.

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – On the 50th Anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson declaring “War on Poverty,” Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today applauded the strides made over the last 5 decades but reflected on the work still left to do. According to a new Council of Economic Advisors report, while poverty had declined from nearly 26% of Americans in 1967 to 16% in 2012, nearly 50 million Americans still struggle each day with the economic hardship and social stigma of living in poverty.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – One of the most outspoken advocates in Congress for medical research programs and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today took to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to lambast a Republican proposal meant to distract from sequestration’s very real and crippling effects on the NIH’s efforts to find cures for debilitating diseases like cancer, stroke, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and AIDS. [WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded $218,775 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for a graduate medical education payment program.
“This funding will help St. Jude continue to provide the best training for the world’s first-class doctors who choose to pursue the path of children’s medicine,” said Congressman Cohen.

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in downtown Memphis was awarded $393,750 in grant funding for a research project regarding LC3-Associated Phagocytosis. The grant comes through the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ (HHS) National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
“This funding will be used to continue important research at St. Jude, one of the world’s finest health care institutions,” said Congressman Cohen.
