WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), the Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, today condemned President Trump's declaration of a state of emergency on the U.S.-Mexican border and made the following statement:

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) tonight voted for, and the House passed, a spending package that will likely avert another government shutdown. The package, which includes $1.375 billion for barriers and bollard fencing but none for the President's requested border wall, will fund the departments and agencies covered by the Agriculture, Commerce-Justice-Science, Financial Services, Homeland Security, Interior-Environment, State-Foreign Operations, and Transportation-Housing and Urban Development appropriations bills through September 30.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) received a 100 percent score from the NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, the organization behind Nuns on the Bus led by Sister Simone Campbell. The score was based on seven House votes, including House passage in December of the First Step Act, which was signed into law.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) was notified of the layoffs at XPO Logistics and made the following statement:
"I am very disappointed that XPO Logistics will lay off more than 400 employees. I have previously met with employees and with the senior management of the company regarding labor issues. I have another meeting with company officials scheduled in two weeks when I look forward to addressing these issues further. This new layoff development is disturbing and I hope the employees affected will be treated fairly and ultimately find new jobs."

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, voted today to move the Bipartisan Background Checks Act to the floor for consideration by the full House.

"David Williams did a great job as a Vice Chancellor and as Vanderbilt's Athletics Director and his professionalism reflected well on the school. As an alumnus, I was sorry when he retired just last month and am even more so at his passing."

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) noted the passing of 13-term North Carolina Congressman Walter B. Jones Jr. on Sunday, and made the following statement:
"Representative Walter Jones was a man of principle, determination and morality. He marched to the beat of a drum less followed. Fair winds and following seas, my friend. I extend my deepest sympathies to his wife Joe Anne and daughter Ashley, his extended family and his many friends."

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), the chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, questioned Acting Attorney General Matthew G. Whitaker at a Judiciary Committee oversight hearing today.
